"Rissaga" alert affects 1,000 passengers
A "rissaga" (tidal bore) alert on Sunday resulted in Ciutadella port being closed from 1745 hrs. until midnight.
The closure affected all three of the shipping lines operating from the port, each of which had a ferry due to arrive during the period. Interilles' "Balear Jet", Iscomar's "Nura Nova" and Baleària's "Ramon Llull" all had to detour to Maó, affecting almost 1,000 passengers, many of whom had to be transported to Maó on coaches chartered by the shipping companies.
Boats to be removed from Es Grau moorings
Owners of moorings in Es Grau have been given until 10th September to remove all boats from the bay. This is to enable work to be carried out to install new berths and moorings between 20th September and 30th November.
Boat owners wanting a mooring will have to present their applications between 12th and 17th July, from 1900 to 2100 hrs. at the Asociación de Vecinos venue in Es Grau.
Flat in Maó totally destroyed by fire
A flat on the second floor of a block situated in Calle Sa Sínia des Muret in Maó was completely destroyed by a fire on Wednesday night, the cause of which is not yet known. Two of the inhabitants at home at the time, a woman and her two-year old son, escaped uninjured.
First of the season's open cricket games
Members, overseas players, visitors and residents who fancy a game of cricket will be more than welcome at the Menorca Cricket Club ground in Biniparrell on Saturday for the first open game of the season. Play starts at 1330 hrs. with player registration half an hour earlier.
Spectators are also encouraged and there is a well-stocked bar at the ground.
XXII Classic Boats Meeting in Fornells
Classic boats will be congregating in Fornells this weekend for the twenty-second meeting arranged for such vessels.
Spectators will have the opportunity to enjoy the sight of these elegant craft gliding across the Bay of Fornells on Saturday, 10th, from 1530 hrs. and Sunday, 11th, from 11 hrs. until lunchtime.
