The first long-distance triathlon to be held on the island took place on Sunday with the staging of the 'Extreme Man 113' event, organised by the Catalan company Winsports Factory in collaboration with the Maó and Fornells Councils.
A total of 290 athletes, including 21 from Menorca, participated in the triathlon which required competitors to swim 1.9 kms. around a triangular course in the Bay of Fornells; cycle 90 kms. equivalent to three and a half laps of a circuit between Fornells and Es Mercadal; and, finally, to run 21 kms. which was three laps of a circuit stretching between the Tower of Fornells and Ses Salines.
Contestants were grouped into various categories according to their sex and age. The winner of the men's overall title was Salamanca athlete Clement Alonso Mckernan who completed the whole event in 4 hours, 5 minutes and 43 seconds and in the women's category, first place went to Alexandra Louison who finished in 4:44:54.
The women's team event was won by Menorcans Margarita Llorens (swimming), Ruth Moll (cycling) and Àngela López (running).
