Tourism will continue to contribute to the island's economy during the coming winter. Three hotels will remain open to offer their facilities to the group of 58 year old plus visitors, known collectively as Seniors.
Club Hotel Almirante Farragut, in Ciutadella; Hotel Cala en Bosc; and Club Hotel Aguamarina y Topacio in Arenal d'en Castell will all remain open. Unlike in previous winters Hotel Hamilton in Es Castell is closed for refurbishment. The hotels state that they make no profit from the venture, but neither do they make a loss. By staying open for ten months of the year – they close between early December and early February – 120 people are kept in work.
Most of the guests stay for between seven and nine nights. Their typical profile is over 58 years of age, travelling as a couple, or as widows or widowers. The clientele are Spanish nationals, mostly from the regions of Cataluña, Basque Country and Madrid. An innovation this winter will be the large numbers who have travelled from Sevilla and Córdoba. Some 30,000 Seniors are expected. The Farragut alone can accommodate 850.
