Valeriano Allés level in league final
Despite losing the first two games of the semi-final to Universidad de Burgos, Valeriano Allés rallied and beat their rivals in the remaining three games, putting the Ciutadella women's volleyball team through to the finals of the Superliga (Spain's top volleyball league), the first time a Menorcan team has achieved such heights.
They are now playing Jamper Aguere in the championship final which is the best of five games; the first two having been played on the rival's home ground in Tenerife last weekend.
The Ciutadella team took the honours in the first leg, beating their opponents 2-3, but their hosts had their revenge the following day, winning 3-0.
The third and fourth games will take place in the Poliesportiu in Ciutadella on 1st and 2nd May.
Should a fifth and deciding game be needed this will again be played in Tenerife, on 6th May.
ViveMenorca finish in third place in League
An impressive away win for ViveMenorca, 59:75 against Palencia, meant that the team finished in third place in the Adecco Oro League and will now take part in the play off series for the title.
The Menorcans will meet Rio Breogan in the quarter finals which will be the best of five legs played on 14th, 16th, 19th, 21st and 23rd May.
Athletic Bilbao player to promote the island
Athletic Club de Bilbao player, Joseba Etxeberria is to promote Menorca as a holiday destination in a campaign run by the Fundació Destí in País Vasco.
At a cost of around 20,000 euros, life-size photographs of the footballer in Menorca will be displayed in the Grupo Eroski's travel agencies in the area.
Probus Club organises three sponsored Charity Walks
Three sponsored Charity Walks will take place on Saturday 8th May to raise sponsor funds for AECC (the Spanish Association against Cancer), Red Cross, Alzheimers Association and Club Vidalba.
The two shorter walks of 2.5 kms. and 5.5 kms. will start at 1230 hrs. and 1130 hrs. respectively from the western (power station) end of Maó harbour. A longer walk of 10 kms. will set out from the beach car park at Es Grau at 1000 hrs.
Participants should ensure that they wear suitable footwear, carry enough water and bring a sunhat.
Afterwards refreshments will be provided by San José Farmhouse Restaurant for all the walkers.
Sponsor forms can be collected from Ca'n Dulce (the Chocolate Shop) in Sant Climent, Jimmy's Bar alongside the fish market in Maó and from the Comercial Papelera in Maó.
The walks provide an enjoyable social occasion as well as giving the satisfaction of raising funds for people in need on the island.
Randy Weston's jazz concert cancelled
The only concert in Menorca's International Jazz Festival to have been scheduled for Maó has had to be cancelled due to flight disruptions as a result of the cloud of volcanic ash entering European air space.
Randy Weston was to have appeared in the Teatre Principal last Friday but had his travel arrangements from New York via Paris postponed for two days.
The musician is about to start a European tour and the Jazz Obert association is trying to arrange another concert in June, if it can be fitted in to the Teatre Principal's programme.
Celso Albelo in Sant Lluís Summer concerts
Sant Lluís Council has released details of the concerts planned for this summer which will star the Canaries tenor Celso Albelo and the Italian soprano Desirée Rancatore.
The concerts will be held at Ses Caneletes Municipal Ground on 10th July and 10th August, the former date also featuring the Barcelona group Gospel Viu.
Interilles restarts sea link to Mallorca
The shipping company Interilles Exprés has restarted the conection between Ciutadella and Cala Ratjada, in Mallorca, after discontinuing the link during the winter months. The route will be covered by the high speed catamaran, Balear Jet, which can carry 308 passengers and complete the journey in 55 minutes.
At first, there will be two return journeys per day, leaving Cala Ratjada at 0900 and 1730 hrs. and Ciutadella at 1045 and 1900 hrs.
Menorca to feature in Estrella Damm advert
A production team from Indio Films will be filming in Menorca from today until next Monday for an Estrella Damm advertisement. The settings chosen for the spot include the port of Ciutadella, Macarelleta beach and, possibly, Maó port. There will be a reenactment of the Sant Joan Fiestas.
