In order to comply with the State Government's announced cuts in spending, there has been a reshuffle at Menorca's Island Council with the loss of one Councillor (for citizens and families), Esteve Ferrer, and five Island Directors, Antoni Anglada, Núria Capó, Josep Sintes, Bartomeu Febrer and Raül Escandell. Their work will now be assumed by other departments.
To create further savings, the Island Councillors' salaries are also to be cut, probably by 15% in line with the pay reductions for members of the State Government and national parliaments. Public employees will also have their wages cut, by around 5%.
Protests
The unions and public employees held various demonstrations on the island last week in protest against economic measures adopted by the State Government to reduce the public deficit and a further protest is planned for 2nd June at 1900 hrs. in Plaça Miranda, Maó.
The local CCOO union is to ask regional and state committees to call for a general strike.
